Interior Design Ideas for Open Plan Living

Modern open-plan living and dining room, with carpeted stairs up to the first floor

When it comes to modern living, having an open plan space is becoming increasingly more popular. There are many benefits to having an open plan space, from making it easier to entertain guests to allowing you to keep an eye on the kids whilst you’re cooking, working or relaxing. There are a few options available when it comes to open plan living, so what interior design ideas can you incorporate in your open plan home?

Everyone is different, everyone’s home is different,
and everyone’s needs are different.

Living Room Diner or Kitchen Diner?

Probably one of the biggest decisions to make when factoring in open plan living, is what rooms to combine to create the open-plan feel. Typically, unless you’re living in a studio flat, open plan living will be reserved for the downstairs living quarters, such as the living room, kitchen and dining room.

Whilst dedicated dining rooms can be useful, they’re usually the first thing to go if you’re looking to maximise space in your home, and with mealtimes becoming less formal over the decades, you can use the space to transform your home into an open plan diner.

Using the space to create a kitchen diner is a popular choice, allowing the kitchen to become an entertainment and socialising space, whilst also giving you more space to cook. You can use the table not just for breakfast, lunch and dinner; but also for casual drinks and games nights, having easy access to the fridge or wine cooler across the room.

An alternative to a kitchen diner is a living room diner, which can be a great way of keeping all entertaining confined to one room, especially if you like watching the TV or putting on a film whilst having your meals.

Sometimes, if kitchen space is limited, a living room diner may be a necessity whether you prefer it or not. However, there are things you can do to divide up the living and dining areas slightly, including the use of divider or cubed shelving units to break things up.

The other option available, is to open everything out in your home, combining the kitchen, dining room and living room to create the ultimate open plan living space to create an open plan kitchen living room diner. There are many benefits to this, including entertaining and allowing light and air to flow around the house. However, you may also need to factor in smells and sounds when cooking.

Open Plan Living When Working From Home

With the increased prevalence of working from home, it can sometimes be hard to balance keeping that open plan feel whilst also giving you the privacy and quiet required to work productively from home. So whilst you may want to have an open plan across the majority of your house, you may want to still include a room or two that allow the level of privacy required to have a video call whilst not being interrupted, or having a quiet space to focus on work.

However, if you don’t have a spare room to turn into a home office, you’ll require a dedicated home working space that you may want to create in the corner of your living room, kitchen diner or even in your bedroom. You can divide the space up by using furniture, or you can even change the wall decorations to signify a change in space.
